Wests Tigers look to make it three wins from three to begin the 2019 season when they face the struggling Canterbury Bulldogs in NRL Round 3 action on Sunday.
The Tigers have never won their first three games of the season since becoming a joint-venture – can Michael Maguire’s troops make club history when they meet the last-placed Bulldogs on Sunday?
It’s been a dream start to the season for the Tigers, with Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah winding back the clock and producing some vintage form to lead the side to impressive victories over the Sea Eagles and Warriors in the opening two rounds.
Maguire has added some much-needed steel to the team without eliminating their natural flair – and so far, the appointment of the former premiership winning coach has been a perfect fit.
Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about the Bulldogs. The club has been left in shambles for the last couple of years now, and Dean Pay is the man tasked with guiding Canterbury through this rebuilding phase.
The Bulldogs have really struggled in attack over the last few years, but worryingly, it’s their defence that’s an obvious weakness so far this season, with the Dogs conceding 76 points across their first two defeats to the Warriors and Eels – two teams that aren’t exactly world beaters either.
While Maguire has understandably opted to keep the same 17 that dispatched the Warriors, Pay has wielded the axe, dropping Christian Chrichton, Raymond Faitala-Mariner, Marcelo Montoya and Sauaso Sue, with Nick Meaney, Corey Harawira Naera, Jayden Okunbor, Rhyse Martin, Chris Smith and Ofahiki Ogden the new faces coming into the side.

The Tigers have won two of their last three meetings, while Canterbury won their last clash 16-4 in Round 20 of the 2018 season. However, I don’t think those games matter much in the context of this encounter – the Dogs have been woeful and are fielding an extremely inexperienced team in a bid to change their fortunes, while the Tigers are flying high, confident and playing some tremendous football. I can see only one winner on Sunday.

South Sydney Rabbitohs aim to extend their perfect start to the season when they meet the lowly Gold Coast Titans to conclude NRL Round 3 action on Sunday night.
On paper and judging by the form of these two teams across the opening two rounds, this could be the biggest mismatch of the round.
South Sydney have arguably been the most impressive team to launch the 2019 season, boasting a win over the minor premiers and taking out the Dragons convincingly. Adam Reynolds looks like he is back to his best, Sam Burgess has made the transition to the edge look easy and Wayne Bennett has slotted in to Redfern seamlessly.
Things couldn’t be going any better for the Bunnies. And when you look at who they have coming up over the next few weeks – the Sea Eagles, Warriors and Bulldogs – they will be setting their sights on a long unbeaten run to begin the year.
On the other hand, the Titans are once again struggling significantly. Garth Brennan’s side have only scored one try in the first two rounds (compared to 11 by Souths) and have conceded 41 points in one-sided losses to Canberra and Cronulla.
Furthermore, their playmaking stocks have been decimated by injury, so it’s not as though they have options to go to for their misfiring attack.

With the Rabbitohs at home, this is looming as potentially the most one-sided game of the season so far. I don’t see any way the Titans can come close to troubling Souths in this one – back the home side in a dominant victory.

Teams:
Rabbitohs: 1 Alex Johnston 2 Dane Gagai 3 Greg Inglis (c) 4 Braidon Burns 5 Campbell Graham 6 Cody Walker 7 Adam Reynolds 8 Tevita Tatola 9 Damien Cook 10 Tom Burgess 11 John Sutton 12 Sam Burgess 13 Cameron Murray.

Paul Gallen will break the record for most Cronulla Sharks games when he leads his team against the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville on Saturday night.
Inspirational skipper Gallen will break Andrew Ettingshausen’s record for most caps for Cronulla this week as he runs out for his 329th game for the club against the Cowboys.
If that doesn’t get the Sharks up for this one, nothing will. It’s been a solid start to the season for Cronulla, but far from spectacular – they went down to the Knights in the opening round and held on for a 20-6 victory against the Titans last week in a game they really should have won by more.
Nevertheless, the Sharks have never been a team that plays an aesthetically pleasing brand of football, just as long as they get the two points at the end of the day.
Cronulla have named an unchanged team for the third week running, but Paul Green has opted for major reshuffles to his side.
In a huge blow, Jason Taumalolo has been ruled out for up to 10 weeks with a knee injury sustained last week in the 29-10 loss to the Broncos.
Coen Hess comes into the starting side, while Corey Jensen is the new man on the bench. Jake Clifford gets his shot at five-eighth, Te Maire Martin switches to fullback, with Justin O’Neill and Tom Opacic both dropped, replaced by Ben Hampton and Jordan Kahu.
Michael Morgan was outstanding in the opening round, but he didn’t have any space to work his magic against the Broncos last week – he will need to lift his game if his forwards can make an impact through the middle.

These two teams have split their last four meetings at two wins apiece, with the Cowboys winning their last clash in Townsville in Round 1 last year. This will surely be a close game – there’s not much separating these sides to begin 2019, while both have impressive forward packs. It could come down to a halves battle between Morgan and Shaun Johnson – and if the latter shines, maybe the Sharks will have that little bit extra to call upon in the crucial stages.

Teams:
Cowboys: 1 Te Maire Martin 2 Nene Macdonald 3 Jordan Kahu 4 Ben Hampton 5 Javid Bowen 6 Jake Clifford 7 Michael Morgan 8 Matt Scott 9 Jake Granville 10 Jordan McLean 11 Gavin Cooper 12 Coen Hess 13 Josh McGuire.

Melbourne Storm appear set to continue their dominant record over Penrith Panthers when the two sides clash in Bathurst on Saturday night in NRL Round 3 action.
Melbourne have won 17 of their last 19 games against Penrith – will that trend continue when he two sides meet in Bathurst on Saturday night?
Most likely. The Storm have been extremely impressive to launch the season, registering comfortable wins over Brisbane and Canberra.
It doesn’t look like they’ve missed a beat with the retirement of Billy Slater, while we all know Craig Bellamy is the ultimate master coach of contemporary rugby league. They’ve hit the ground running in 2019 and are once again the benchmark.
One of four teams to remain unbeaten across the first four rounds, Bellamy has stuck with the same 17 players that overcame the Raiders in the nation’s capital last week.
Penrith were disappointing in their opening match of the season as they went down to the Eels, but they bounce back strongly last week as they took out the Knights.
It was a nightmare off-season for the Panthers, but they have the roster to genuinely challenge for the premiership this season – and facing the Storm will give them a true test of where they’re currently at.

The Panthers will have strong support in Bathurst in what will be a cold night in the country town, but I can’t go past the Storm. They have a dominant record over Penrith and have easily been the best team to start the new season.

Panthers: 1 Dylan Edwards 2 Josh Mansour 3 Dean Whare 4 Waqa Blake 5 Dallin Watene-Zelezniak 6 James Maloney 7 Nathan Cleary 8 James Tamou 9 Sione Katoa 10 Reagan Campbell-Gillard 11 James Fisher-Harris 12 Frank Winterstein 13 Hame Sele

New Zealand Warriors look to bounce back from their disappointing performance last week when they face the winless Manly Sea Eagles to launch Super Saturday in Christchurch.

Manly take a home game across the Tasman as Christchurch plays host to their NRL Round 3 encounter against the Warriors on Saturday.

After a dismal 2018 campaign, things haven’t gotten any better to kick off 2019, despite the return of favourite son Des Hasler as coach.

Manly were blown off the park in the opening round by the Tigers, and although they clawed their way back against the Roosters and lost by a respectable 26-18 scoreline, that had more to do with the terrible weather than the Sea Eagles genuinely troubling the reigning premiers.

The Sea Eagles do receive a massive boost for this clash, with Origin star Tom Trbojevic coming back into the side at fullback after missing the start of the season through injury.

However, if Manly are to start making an impact, they need Daly Cherry-Evans to step up and play like a $10 million player. Safe to say, he hasn’t come close to fulfilling that price tag.

Meanwhile, the Warriors failed to build on their enormous win over the Bulldogs in the opening round, slipping to a lacklustre 34-6 defeat to the Tigers last week.

Inconsistency has always held the Warriors back, and judging by their first two performances this season, it could be a problem once more in 2019.

Despite the heavy loss, coach Stephen Kearney has opted to stick with the same 17 players for this encounter.

Manly have dominated the Warriors in recent meetings, winning their last seven encounters until the Kiwi club snapped the streak with a 34-12 win in Christchurch in their last clash in Round 14 last year. It’s a tough match to call – both teams were poor against the Tigers, but the Warriors should have plenty of emotion playing in Christchurch considering the tragic events of a couple of weeks ago – I’m backing the ‘away’ side to emerge victorious.

Teams:
Sea Eagles: 1 Tom Trbojevic 2 Jorge Taufua 3 Moses Suli 4 Brad Parker 5 Reuben Garrick 6 Kane Elgey 7 Daly Cherry-Evans 8 Addin Fonua-Blake 9 Apisai Koroisau 10 Martin Taupau 11 Joel Thompson 12 Curtis Sironen 13 Jake Trbojevic

Canberra Raiders and Newcastle Knights clash for the first time in over a year when they meet in NRL Round 3 action on Friday night.
Canberra and Newcastle do battle for the first time since Round 2 last year as the two teams look to improve to 2-1 starts to the 2019 season on Friday night in the nation’s capital.
Both sides have been pretty impressive to launch the new season, with the Raiders winning their opening game easily against the Titans, before running into a red-hot Melbourne outfit last week, while the Knights scored an opening round win over Cronulla, but couldn’t hold on as they slipped to a two-point defeat to the Panthers in Round 2.
Defence has been the big area of improvement for the Raiders, with the Green Machine not conceding a single point against the

Titans, while a lot of other sides would have leaked more than 22 against last week’s Storm side.
Ricky Stuart has been forced into making a change this week, with Joe Tapine out injured for two weeks with a broken thumb. John Bateman slips into the back-row, with Ryan Sutton coming into the starting side and Hudson Young claiming a spot on the bench.
Nathan Brown has named an unchanged team from his side that narrowly went down to the Panthers, with David Klemmer quickly becoming a cult hero for Hunter side.
Klemmer ran for 198 metres last week, making 21 hit-ups and 34 tackles without a single miss, while he also leads the NRL in post-contact metres this season. If Klemmer can keep chalking up those numbers, it will allow Kalyn Ponga and Mitchell Pearce the space and time they need to work their magic in the halves.

Newcastle won their only clash last year 30-28, while their last seven meetings have topped over 48 points. However, with both sides having improve defensively, this could be quite a low-scoring contest. It should be a close battle, but I’m liking what I’m seeing so far from the Raiders in 2019. I think they’ll edge this one.

Teams:
Raiders: 1 Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad 2 Nick Cotric 3 Jarrod Croker 4 Joseph Leilua 5 Jordan Rapana 6 Jack Wighton 7 Aidan Sezer 8 Josh Papalii 9 Josh Hodgson 10 Dunamis Lui 11 John Bateman 12 Elliott Whitehead 13 Ryan Sutton

Parramatta Eels put their unbeaten start to the season on the line when they host minor premiers Sydney Roosters in NRL Round 3 action on Friday night.

One of four teams to remain unbeaten after the first two rounds, can the Eels do the unthinkable and knock off the reigning premiers on Friday night?

Parramatta are already a third of the way toward their total of six wins from last season after dispatching the Panthers in the opening round and coming from 10-0 down to beat the Bulldogs 36-16 last week.

Already appearing a much tighter unit than last season, the Eels’ win over Canterbury was even more impressive when taking into consideration they were missing a host of key players.

Brad Arthur will get one of them back for this week as Michael Jennings returns to the starting side from suspension, replacing Josh Hoffman.

However, the Roosters are also welcoming back significant star-power as Cooper Cronk and Jake Friend return from injury at halfback and hooker respectively.

The Roosters haven’t been at their best over the first two rounds, going down to Souths in their opener, but they grabbed their first win of the season in diabolical conditions last week against Manly, holding on for a 26-18 win.

In dry conditions and with two key members of their spine back, I’m expecting a much more polished performance from the reigning premiers on Friday night. Parramatta should be able to make a contest of this going by their own start to the season, but the Roosters have so much class, that they will be hard to stop.

Teams:
Eels: 1 Clinton Gutherson 2 Maika Sivo 3 Michael Jennings 4 Brad Takairangi 5 Blake Ferguson 6 Dylan Brown 7 Mitchell Moses 8 Daniel Alvaro 9 Reed Mahoney 10 Junior Paulo 11 Shaun Lane 12 Marata Niukore 13 Tepai Moeroa.

Brisbane Broncos look to condemn St George Illawarra Dragons to a 0-3 start to the season when the two teams launch NRL Round 3 action on Thursday night.

St George Illawarra Dragons face a tough test to avoid losing their third straight match to open the season when they meet the Brisbane Broncos on Thursday night at Suncorp Stadium.

It’s all gone wrong for the Dragons to kick off 2019, losing to the Cowboys and Rabbitohs in the first two rounds, while they’ve also lost star forward Tyson Frizell to injury.

Traditionally, the Dragons have always started seasons on a positive note in recent times and tailed off as the year drags on, but this time they will be playing catch-up from the get-go.

Paul McGregor isn’t panicking though, making just one change to the team that lost 34-18 to the Rabbitohs, with Korbin Sims returning from injury in place of Josh Kerr.

Brisbane meanwhile picked up their first win of the season after falling to Melbourne in their opener, producing a brilliant performance to take out the Cowboys by a 29-10 scoreline last week.

Tavita Pangai put together one of the performances of the round in a destructive display in the forwards, outmuscling the impressive Cowboys back almost single-handedly. If he can keep up that level for the rest of the season, watch out

Jack Bird is also producing some resurgent form after a tough injury-riddled campaign in his debut season with the Broncos last season.

The Dragons have fond memories of their last visit to Suncorp, destroying the Broncos 48-18 in last season’s elimination final. However, the Broncos are looking slick and polished to start the new season, while the Dragons are seemingly still trying to figure out combinations and are struggling to put together 80-minute performances. Back the Broncos at home.

Parramatta Eels look to make it two wins from two to start the season when they take on a struggling Canterbury Bulldogs side on Sunday at ANZ Stadium.
After finishing last season with the dreaded wooden spoon, the Eels have a great chance to register their second win on the bounce to launch 2019 when they meet bitter rivals the Bulldogs on Sunday.
Parramatta fans haven’t had much to cheer about over the last few decades really, but they were up on their feet for the opening round last week as their team conquered Penrith by a 20-12 scoreline in the battle of the west.
It was a big win for the Eels, who desperately need to get off to a good start in order to fuel some confidence.
However, they do have some players missing for this clash, with Michael Jennings suspended and Nathan Brown injured, while Will Smith is also out.
While the Eels impressed last week, Canterbury were diabolical, leaking 40 points against the Warriors in another lacklustre performance.
The biggest criticism of the Bulldogs over the last few years has been their attack and creativity in the final third – and after one game, it doesn’t look like much has changed during the off-season.
Lachlan Lewis looked to have all the time in the world last season, but the rookie halfback appeared rushed against the Warriors. If the Bulldogs are to have any success this year, Lewis will need to step up and avoid second year syndrome.

Parramatta have had the wood over Canterbury in recent seasons, winning five of their last six encounters. Considering how both teams performed last week, you’ve got to go with the Eels again. Canterbury simply don’t threaten in attack, and if their defence is as poor as it was against the Warriors, they won’t be winning many games this season.

Wests Tigers and New Zealand Warriors aim to build on their victories last week when they conclude NRL Round 2 action on Sunday night.
Following impressive opening round victories last week, who will make it two wins from two as the Tigers and Warriors square off on Sunday night?
The Tigers produced a clinical display to take out the Sea Eagles, while the Warriors were ruthless as they put 40 points past a lacklustre Bulldogs side.
These two teams are both guilty of failing to live up to expectation over the last few seasons, while they’ve also each struggled with consistency.
The Tigers were in and around the top four for the first half of last season only to fade away badly, while the same could be more or less said about the Warriors, with the Kiwi club limping into the finals before being eliminated at the first time of asking.
Both teams have proven they can start a season with a bang, but the big test for the Warriors and Tigers will come in the back-half of the year, when push comes to shove and other teams start stepping up when it really matters.
However, for now, the Tigers and Warriors will be firmly focused on maintaining a 100 per cent record to start the season. The Tigers haven’t made any changes to their 17, while Isaiah Papali’i returns on the bench in place of Blake Ayshford for the Warriors.

The Tigers have won four of the last five games between the teams, but the Warriors prevailed in their last clash in Round 9 of 2018. It’s a tough one to pick, but the Bulldogs really didn’t put up any kind of fight last week, and I think the Warriors might find this game a lot more challenging, especially in their first away clash of the campaign. I’m backing the Tigers home in a tight one.

Players List:
Tigers: 1 Corey Thompson 2 Mahe Fonua 3 Paul Momirovski 4 Esan Marsters 5 Robert Jennings 6 Benji Marshall 7 Luke Brooks 8 Ben Matulino 9 Robbie Farah 10 Alex Twal 11 Ryan Matterson 12 Luke Garner 13 Elijah Taylor.

Cronulla Sharks and Gold Coast Titans aim for their first win of the season when they square off on Saturday at Shark Park in NRL Round 2 action.

After suffering first round defeats last week, which of the Sharks and Titans will bounce back and register their first victory for 2019 on Saturday?

Cronulla weren’t too far off the pace in going down 14-8 away to the Knights, but they did lack some cohesiveness in the halves, with Shaun Johnson still getting used to the different style of football the Sharks play.

However, with former Warriors teammate Chad Townsend in the halves, it shouldn’t take long before Johnson is terrorising opposition defence in a Sharks jersey.

He should be relishing a chance to face an injury-hit Titans outfit, who leaked 21 points without reply in their opening round loss to the Raiders at home last week.

Gold Coast lost their halves pairing of Tyrone Roberts and Ash Taylor to injury during the game and it showed, with the team failing to conjure up anything in attack.

Ryley Jacks and AJ Brimson are the men who will replace them in the halves for Saturday’s encounter with the Sharks, while Anthony Don comes onto the wing in place of Phillip Sami, who reverts to the bench.

Gold Coast actually have a great recent record against the Sharks, winning three of their last four meetings, but I don’t see any way they can beat Cronulla on Saturday. They are already depleted and it’s tough to see where the points will come from. The Sharks are still a work in progress, but they should have enough firepower to get the job done.

Players List:

Sharks: 1 Matt Moylan 2 Sosaia Feki 3 Josh Dugan 4 Josh Morris 5 Sione Katoa 6 Shaun Johnson 7 Chad Townsend 8 Andrew Fifita 9 Jayden Brailey 10 Matt Prior 11 Briton Nikora 12 Kurt Capewell 13 Paul Gallen.

Interchange: 14 Blayke Brailey 15 Jayson Bukuya 16 Aaron Woods 17 Jack Williams. Reserves: 18 Scott Sorensen 19 Kyle Flanagan 20 Bronson Xerri 21 Braden Hamlin-Uele.

Titans: 1 Michael Gordon 2 Anthony Don 3 Tyrone Peachey 4 Brian Kelly 5 Brenko Lee 6 AJ Brimson 7 Ryley Jacks 8 Jarrod Wallace 9 Nathan Peats 10 Shannon Boyd 11 Kevin Proctor 12 Ryan James 13 Jai Arrow.

Interchange: 14 Phillip Sami 15 Moeaki Fotuaika 16 Max King 17 Bryce Cartwright. Reserves: 18 Mitch Rein 19 Jai Whitbread 20 Leilani Latu 21 Jesse Arthars.

Newcastle Knights target back-to-back wins at home to launch the 2019 NRL season when they play host to Penrith Panthers in Round 2 action on Saturday.

After their prized scalp of the Sharks last week, can the Knights start the season with consecutive wins on their own turf when they square off against the Panthers on Saturday?

It wasn’t the cleanest of performances by any means, but the Knights showed they can dig deep and scrap out a win as they conquered Cronulla by a 14-8 scoreline.

Cronulla had just beaten them convincingly in a trial match a couple of weeks prior, so it was a nice response from Nathan Brown’s side.

David Klemmer was especially impressive in his debut for Newcastle, running for 218m off 20 hit-ups and racking up 33 tackles – if he can produce those numbers again, it will allow halves Mitchell Pearce and Kalyn Ponga to work their magic.

Penrith meanwhile were determined to let their on-field work do the talking after a nightmare off-season, but they were disjointed and all over the place as they were defeated 20-12 by rivals Parramatta.

The Panthers got off to a slow start last season and they will want to avoid playing catch-up again in 2019 as they set their sights on a top four spot.

The battle of the halves is the most intriguing sub-plot of this clash, with NSW incumbents James Maloney and Nathan Cleary coming up against current Queensland rising star Ponga and former Blues half Pearce. Cleary and Ponga in particular is a rivalry that could dominate inside the NRL and Origin arena for the next decade.

Penrith have won three of their last four games between the teams, but Newcastle prevailed 20-12 in their last clash in Round 23 in 2018. This Newcastle team is much improved from years gone by, and after the respective displays from both sides in Round 1, I think they’re favourites for this one. The Panthers were far from their best and struggled for any kind of rhythm, while the Knights impressed while also knowing they have another gear to go to. At home, I’m backing another Newcastle win on Saturday.

Players List:
Knights: 1 Connor Watson 2 Edrick Lee 3 Hymel Hunt 4 Jesse Ramien 5 Shaun Kenny-Dowall 6 Kalyn Ponga 7 Mitchell Pearce 8 David Klemmer 9 Danny Levi 10 James Gavet 11 Siona Mata’utia 12 Lachlan Fitzgibbon 13 Tim Glasby.

Interchange: 14 Kurt Mann 15 Aidan Guerra 16 Mitchell Barnett 17 Herman Ese’ese Reserves: 18 Josh King 19 Jamie Buhrer 20 Mason Lino 21 Brodie Jones.

Panthers: 1 Dylan Edwards 2 Josh Mansour 3 Dean Whare 4 Waqa Blake 5 Dallin Watene-Zelezniak 6 James Maloney 7 Nathan Cleary 8 James Tamou 9 Sione Katoa 10 Reagan Campbell-Gillard 11 James Fisher-Harris 12 Isaah Yeo 13 Hame Sele.

Interchange: 14 Wayde Egan 15 Frank Winterstein 16 Moses Leota 17 Jack Hetherington Reserves: 18 Jarome Luai 19 Tim Grant 20 Liam Martin 21 Malakai Watene-Zelezniak.

Reigning premiers Sydney Roosters seek their first win of the season when they square off against the Manly Sea Eagles to conclude Super Saturday at Lottoland.

After producing a lacklustre opening round display against the Rabbitohs last week, the Roosters will be determined for a much better showing as they face the struggling Sea Eagles on Saturday.

Slated to become the first team since 1992/92 to win back-to-back premierships, the Roosters failed to get off to a winning start in terrible conditions last week at the SCG, falling to the Rabbitohs by a 26-16 scoreline.

It’s not like the effort wasn’t there for the Roosters, but they were just slow out of the blocks and simply couldn’t go with Souths when they put the foot down on the accelerator.

They will be hoping for a better start at Lottoland against a Sea Eagles side who – after one game – don’t look any better than last season.

Manly barely offered anything in a 20-6 defeat to the Tigers last week and will have to raise their level significantly to hang with the Roosters.

Former premiership-winning coach Des Hasler was brought in to provide some spark and grit at Manly, but it appeared the game had left him behind during his final season at the Bulldogs – and last week’s loss against the Tigers didn’t do him any favours.

Manly have won three of their last five against the Roosters, but the Bondi has prevailed in their last two, including putting 50 points on them in their last clash in Round 19 in 2018. I don’t expect the Roosters to be firing on all cylinders this early in the season, but they should bounce back emphatically and move past the Sea Eagles with ease.

Players List:
Sea Eagles: 1 Brendan Elliot 2 Jorge Taufua 3 Moses Suli 4 Brad Parker 5 Reuben Garrick 6 Kane Elgey 7 Daly Cherry-Evans 8 Toafofoa Sipley 9 Apisai Koroisau 10 Martin Taupau 11 Joel Thompson 12 Curtis Sironen 13 Jake Trbojevic.

Interchange: 14 Isaac Liu 15 Zane Tetevano 16 Lindsay Collins 17 Angus Crichton Reserves 18 Nat Butcher 19 Matt Ikuvalu 20 Sitili Tupouniua 21 Poasa Faamausili.

Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys renew their rivalry when they square off in NRL Round 2 action on Friday night at Suncorp Stadium.
Brisbane and North Queensland are set for another tight tussle as the two teams battle for early season bragging rights on Friday nights.
The last 10 games between these teams have been decided by a 1-12 margin, including a series of three straight one-point thrillers, including the 2015 NRL Grand Final, where a Johnathan Thurston field goal landed the Cowboys their maiden premiership.
Thurston of course called time on his legendary career at the end of last season, but Michael Morgan showed last week he is more than capable of slipping into his boots and piloting the Cowboys around the paddock.
North Queensland were on of the stand-out teams in the opening round last week, conquering the Dragons 24-12, highlighted by a blistering performance by their forward pack – especially Jason Taumalolo – which in turn allowed Morgan the space and time he needed to create.
Meanwhile, the Broncos weren’t too bad against the Storm down at AAMI Park last week, but they never really threatened to challenge for the win apart from a brief fightback midway though the second half.
Anthony Seibold now faces a bit of pressure to avoid a two-match losing run to open the season against a Cowboys side that is soaring in confidence after just one game.
The main issue for the Broncos against Melbourne was their lack of structure in the halves – both Anthony Milford and Kodi Nikorima are instinct players, and while that can be a good thing, playing them both at the same time in the halves is still very much a work in progress.

I think this will be another very close game, but with the way North Queensland won the forward battle last week – and how Morgan performed on the back of that – I’ve got to give the Cowboys the edge. Paul Green’s team arguably has the best forward pack in the game, and if Morgan reproduces his quality from last week, he should be able to guide the Cowboys over the line.

Players List:
Broncos: 1 Darius Boyd 2 Corey Oates 3 James Roberts 4 Jack Bird 5 Jamayne Isaako 6 Anthony Milford 7 Kodi Nikorima 8 Tevita Pangai Jr 9 Andrew McCullough 10 Joe Ofahengaue 11 Alex Glenn 12 David Fifita 13 Matt Gillett.
Interchange: Kotoni Staggs 15 Jaydn Su’a 16 Thomas Flegler 17 Shaun Fensom. Reserves: 18 Patrick Carrigan 19 Patrick Mago 20 Richard Kennar 21 Gehamat Shibasaki.
Cowboys: 1 Jordan Kahu 2 Nene Macdonald 3 Justin O’Neill 4 Tom Opacic 5 Javid Bowen 6 Te Maire Martin 7 Michael Morgan 8 Matthew Scott 9 Jake Granville 10 Jordan McLean 11 Gavin Cooper 12 Coen Hess 13 Jason Taumalolo.
Interchange: 14 John Asiata 15 Josh McGuire 16 Mitchell Dunn 17 Francis Molo. Reserves: 18 Ben Hampton 19 Jake Clifford 20 Corey Jensen 23 Enari Tuala.

Canberra Raiders attempt to back up their impressive opening round display when they play host to traditional juggernauts Melbourne Storm in NRL Round 2 action on Friday night.
Both the Raiders and Storm started the season with a bang last week, but who will make it two wins from two to launch 2019 in the nation’s capital on Friday night?
These two sides played out a gripping preliminary final showdown back in 2016, but while the Storm prevailed and kicked on as they normally do after that, the Raiders faded back into relative obscurity, missing out on a finals spot the last two seasons.
On their day, Canberra can match it with any side in the competition, but their defence and general discipline consistently let them down, while they also lost countless matches by a margin of six points or less.
Attack has never been an issue for the Raiders, but defence has been – and that’s why Ricky Stuart has come out and revealed his side have been working almost solely on the latter this past off-season.
It showed during the opening round last week, with Canberra holding the Titans out for the entire 80 minutes as they registered a 21-0 victory. Can they reproduce that effort on Friday night?
Obviously Melbourne are an entirely different proposition, but they will fancy themselves.
As they’ve done every season since Craig Bellamy took over at the helm, the Storm emerged triumphant in the opening round, gliding past the Broncos by a 22-12 scoreline.
It wasn’t the most polished of performances, especially as Brisbane threatened to claw their way back into the contest in the second half, but a runaway try to Jesse Bromwich with 12 minutes to go ultimately sealed the game.
Bellamy always has his teams prepared for the opening round, and while they weren’t operating as a slick and well-oiled machine, it was more than enough to get the job done.
However, I can the Storm can expect a much tougher battle in Canberra on Friday night. Since 2014, the sides are split at two wins apiece at the venue, with all of the margins relatively tight. With the Raiders’ new look defence, I think this will be a low-scoring game – and whoever’s defence holds firm will come away with the win.

Players List:
Raiders: 1 Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad 2 Nick Cotric 3 Jarrod Croker 4 Joseph Leilua 5 Jordan Rapana 6 Jack Wighton 7 Aidan Sezer 8 Josh Papalii 9 Josh Hodgson 10 Sia Soliola 11 Joe Tapine 12 Elliott Whitehead 13 John Bateman.
